Janet, Missy, Others Honor Aaliyah During VMAs

Jackson reads letter submitted to MTV.com by fan; Aaliyah's brother thanks friends and colleagues who offered condolences.

The joyous, free-spirited atmosphere of the Video Music Awards was momentarily put on hold by a touching tribute to 22-year-old singer Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash August 25.

Janet Jackson, in a pink hat and modest black dress, opened the memorial by recounting Aaliyah's sentiment when her grandmother passed away: "One day we will be together again." She then read a letter from K, 19, of Decatur, Georgia, which was sent to MTVNews.com (see "Fans Remember Aaliyah"). It said, in part, "I for one will not be sad or mourn her death, but celebrate her life and be thankful for her gift that's touched so many. We haven't lost anyone.

Lesson From Aaliyah Joiner

Taking all video games out of the Tolson Center was not an easy thing for Clarence Thomas to do. The games were popular, but he believes, they were sending kids the wrong message. Clarence Thomas says, "I didn't think the violence that the video games were showing was a good thing to have in the center with kids this age." A move that family members of Aaliyah Joiner support. They say, violent video games may have been a factor in her death. Lori Harrington says, "Playing violent video games can really condition children to connect violence with fun and kinda see violence as a normal part of everyday life." The cousin who accidentally shot her played the games often and may not have understood just how deadly guns can be. "I don't think he really understood how dangerous guns are and I think this really is gonna wake him up." But this grieving family hopes the wake up call will also be heard by everyone in the community.

First Basketball Practice Without Aaliyah Joiner

While Aaliyah's family continues to grieve, the basketball team the 11 year old played on held their first practice since she passed away. "Just remember, remember what she meant." Kenneth Hunt delivered that message to his basketball team before beginning their first practice without their star player, Aaliyah Joiner Wednesday. Hunt says, "I don't know how I'm going to coach without Aaliyah being the starting line up. She was a coach's dream. She did everything we asked her to do. She worked hard." As a talented basketball player, a gifted student and most importantly, a good friend. Katie Hojara says, "She brought joy to the team. She was always smiling and joking around." De'yahanna Styles says, "She's a good person, she always had you laughing and smiling." A smile remembered, as this team gathered together to laugh and cry about the loss of Aaliyah Joiner.

Aaliyah Joiner Funeral

And as FOX 28's Jennifer Jarrell tells us, the death of the child is never easy, but under these circumstances it is even more difficult. A day filled with emotion. Aaliyah's Uncle John Warren said.. "They may have retired her jersey down here, but Aaliyah is playing on a better, higher team in heaven." Only 11-years old, Aaliyah Joiner is gone. Aaliyah's Teacher said.. "Always being positive, had a zest for life, wanted to do the right thing all the time, all about pleasing others. More than 3-hundred people came together....to share memories of Aaliyah's life. Aaliyah's Basketball Coach said.. "One thing about Aaliyah, I dont know if everybody knows, she was the most passionate individual I've ever known in my life, and for an 11-year-old to be that passionate, it's unbelievable." Aaliyah's Family Friend Hattie Redmond said "I just want to read what Aaliyah wrote to her 3rd grade teacher.
