Off-duty detective nabs alleged bank robber
An off-duty Chicago police detective, alerted to a bank heist that had taken place just before he entered the bank to do personal business there, left the bank and caught the suspected robber. The robbery happened about 10 a.m. Monday at the Charter One Bank branch at 1357 W. 103rd St., according to a federal criminal complaint. A woman later identified as Michelle Marie Williams, according to the complaint, walked into the bank with her hands in her coat pockets. When she took her hands out of her pockets, she allegedly had a handgun in one hand and a black plastic bag in the other. She pointed the gun at a teller and shouted at her to put the money in the bag, the complaint alleged. The teller removed a dye pack from her drawer and put it in the bag, along with a total of $3,633, which the suspect grabbed and left the bank with.
Presenting the history of a four-letter word
Alas, the gloriously succinct title of "F--," Steve Anderson's documentary about the history of obscenity is unfit for publication in a family newspaper. And one of the unanswered questions in this entertaining and well-researched cultural-linguistic profile is why, exactly. No one knows the word's precise etymology or how it has held on to its vulgar charm for all these centuries, but the term has definitely been dirty since its first appearance in the late 15th century. The film considers its titular four-letter word's ancient and modern histories and its appearance in various branches of human life (sports, law, religion, popular culture, etc . ). Anderson presents this showcase with reasonable flippancy. We get a breezy cartoon run down of the word's many parts of speech, for instance.
Sheryl Crow's Golden Inspiration
Sheryl Crow woke up Thursday morning to news that she got a nod for a Golden Globe, and TMZ has video of her in studio recording the nominated song.Crow received a Best Original Song nomination for her performance of Try Not to Remember from the film "Home of the Brave." Crow says she was moved after seeing a rough cut of the movie, saying "It was really inspiring, I really felt compelled to write about it." The movie tells the story of returning Iraqi war veterans who have to adjust to life again. "It strikes a cord, a familiarity with the Vietnam War, where you come home from a war and you can not figure out how to fit back into society," says Crow, "you've seen too many images that are too disturbing." Suffice to say, it's definitely a heavy song."Home of the Brave" opens this weekend. Golden Globes will be handed out January 15.PermalinkEmail this Comments [20] .
